Professor Accetti argues that many elite universities have drifted away from their core civic mission by prioritizing research prestige over civic education, becoming “rarefied research parks” focused on grants, patents, and citations. Not only has this shift left universities politically vulnerable, but by failing to demonstrate a clear public role, they have also lost public trust. To rebuild public trust, universities must reaffirm their public purpose, placing civic education and democratic values at the forefront of higher learning.
